One of the most popular summer flowers… Dahlia! These flowers come in the brightest colors, coolest shapes and best of all: a real eye-catcher in every bouquet or floral arrangement. Although Dahlias are beautiful, they are very delicate and most of the time damaged after transport. In this blog post we will discuss the best way to prep your Dahlias and give them that extra love-boost.
When you unpack a delicate product like Dahlia, please be careful so you will not damage it by unboxing your flowers. If you follow the steps below, you will certainly have beautiful Dahlias.
Step 1: How to cut Dahlia?
Grab your sharp scissors (already seen our pink Sakagen scissors at Hoek Exclusive? Believe me, this will be the best florist-purchase in your life) and cut the stems in a sharp 45-degree angle. This allows the water to absorb better.
Step 2: How to hydrate Dahlia?
Fill a clean bucket or vase with lukewarm water and add – I’m not kidding – Gerbera tablets (Chrysal CVBN tablets), this may sound a bit weird, but this is by far the best flower food you can give your Dahlias. This is because of the hollow stem of the Dahlia, just like the Gerbera.
Strip any foliage that will be below the waterline in the vase. This prevents bacterial growth and keeps the water clean; we don’t want dirty water with such beautiful flowers.
Step 4: Where to place my Dahlias
Give your Dahlias cut flowers some "me time" in a cool and breezy spot, away from the sun, for at least 2-3 hours, or even better, overnight. This allows the flowers to soak up water and perk up, regaining their bouncy and fresh look, that is what we want right?!
Step 5: Arranging Dahlia
After the conditioning period, remove the Dahlias cut flowers from the bucket, discard the old water, and refill it with fresh, lukewarm water. Add floral CVBN tablets or flower food again. Trim the Dahlia stems as needed to achieve the desired height in your arrangement. Remove any excess foliage that may be below the waterline. Arrange the flowers in a clean vase filled with fresh water.
Step 6: Magic Chrysal Spray
After you’ve followed all the steps above, your Dahlias are ready to shine… Oh wait! We need a finishing touch! Spray the magical ‘Glory Spray’ from Chrysal all over the flowers to make them last longer, perfect for all your flowers!
And there you have it! You now have all the insider tips to treat your Dahlias cut flowers like the amazing flowers they are. Just give them a nice cut with sharp scissors, let them soak up some fresh water with flower food, and allow them to relax in a cool spot. Your Dahlias will reward you with bright colors and a touch of flower magic. So go ahead, pick your fave Dahlias, place your order, follow the steps we told you and create your art. Because like we always say, we supply the ingredients and you make the art; also known as “We Deliver, You Create.”
"Keep shining and creating, flower artist!"
P.S. all the products we mentioned from Chrysal we have available in our webshop, you can find them in ‘sundries’.

Sustainable flower delivery – The Secret Garden Flowers
SustainablityIn the middle of April, we launched our new sustainable flower box. These boxes are made of 100% recycled materials, and re-usable up to 200 times! Before, we were sending all our flowers in cardboard boxes. Although we picked up most of the boxes and recycled them, nothing beats this newly invented box. We’ve teamed up with a company called ‘Newwen’, they are focusing on sustainability by making everything recyclable, reusable and they’re moving towards zero waste and 100% sustainability.
Together with one of our florists, Jolanta from ‘The Secret Garden Flowers’, we reviewed the box and spoke about how this box changed things for her. We shared the interview with Newwen and they made an amazing article, one I’d like to share with you.
