Halloween Flowers: Bring the Season into Your Flower Shop

Halloween is a great moment to bring something different into your flower shop. Think beyond pumpkins and bright orange decorations and use flowers, foliage and seasonal materials to create a Halloween atmosphere. Dark colours, unusual shapes and rich textures can turn a regular autumn display into something a little more dramatic.

Think Beyond Orange

Orange is a classic Halloween colour, but there are plenty of other shades that work beautifully. Burgundy, dark red, purple, brown and deep green can create a moody autumn colour palette, while black flowers or very dark foliage add contrast. Try combining orange roses or dahlias with burgundy chrysanthemums, dark red flowers and purple accents for a traditional Halloween look. Or keep it more elegant with deep burgundy, plum and dark red tones.

Flowers with a Halloween Feel

The best Halloween flowers are not necessarily flowers that look “spooky”. Look for varieties with interesting colours, shapes and textures that naturally work with the season.

Some flowers and seasonal materials to consider include:

Black calla lilies for a dramatic, sculptural look
Orange roses for a classic autumn and Halloween colour
Purple chrysanthemums for rich colour and volume
Dark dahlias for a bold seasonal focal flower
Red amaranthus for movement and texture
Physalis for its distinctive orange lantern-like fruits
Celosia for unusual shapes and warm autumn colours
Scabiosa for a softer, more delicate texture
Eryngium for a blue-grey, spiky accent
Brassica for structure and a strong seasonal feel

You can combine these with autumn foliage and other seasonal cut flowers to create arrangements with plenty of depth and texture.

Create a Spooky Seasonal Bouquet

A Halloween bouquet doesn't have to look like a Halloween decoration. Start with a seasonal autumn bouquet and give it a darker twist.

For example, combine warm orange flowers with burgundy and dark red varieties, then add textured flowers such as celosia or amaranthus. Physalis can add a recognisable seasonal touch, while foliage in deeper green or brown tones helps bring the colours together.

For a more dramatic bouquet, work with darker flowers and strong shapes. Black calla lilies, dark dahlias, eryngium and deep red flowers can create a moody look without relying on additional decorations.

The key is to create contrast. Mix different flower sizes, textures and shapes to make the bouquet feel rich and seasonal.

From Subtle to Spooky

Not every customer will be looking for a spooky Halloween arrangement. That is why it can be useful to offer different interpretations of the season.

A subtle Halloween bouquet could use autumn flowers in burgundy, orange and brown, with just one or two unusual elements such as Physalis.

For an elegant Halloween arrangement, focus on deep reds, purples and almost-black flowers, keeping the design simple and sophisticated.

And for customers who really want to embrace Halloween, go bold with dark flowers, strong contrasts, unusual shapes and seasonal decorative elements.

This gives you plenty of ways to incorporate Halloween into your flower shop while still working with the autumn flowers already in season.
